Workers flee after blaze consumes Hercules Offshore liftboat

Posted on Jan 27, 2012

27 workers escaped with their lives after flames engulfed the Hercules Offshore liftboat Mako in a Nigeria offshore oil rig fire, the company reports on its website.

The event occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 16 approximately 155 miles off the coast of Port Harcourt. Indications from company officials are that the 175-foot vessel suffered major damage. The fire began on the rig KS Endeavor and quickly swept over the adjacent Mako, which was providing extra storage services to the platform. The workers were safely evacuated and transported to a clinic for evaluation and treatment.

The company said it notified the U.S. Coast Guard and other authorities about the incident.

The report on Hercules’ website seemingly devotes at least as much information on the insured value of the damaged vessel and on the company profile as it does on the effect the fire and evacuation had on its workers.

Hercules Offshore has oil and gas operations around the world but its company headquarters is in Houston.
