A worker fell to his death aboard an abandoned gas well platform in the Gulf of Mexico at 4:00 a.m. April 18. The death occurred when the man dropped through a deck opening, said a spokesperson with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement. Emergency responders treated him at the scene before he was airlifted to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim worked for Alliance Oilfield Services, which was hired to plug the well. The well is located 129 miles south of Lake Charles, LA and is owned by Hilcorp.
