Woman Still Missing After Boat Accident

Posted on Mar 07, 2011

The search is still underway for a 35-year-old woman who fell into the Currituck Sound after the boat she was on capsized. The incident took place at approximately 11:30 AM on Monday morning, February 28, 2011, off the North Carolina coast.

According to Currituck County Sheriff Susan Johnson, a fishing boat capsized on Monday morning sending three people into the water. Reports indicate that after a few hours of staying with the boat, Billy Jo Harris of Virginia, left the boat and attempted to swim to shore. The United States Coast Guard is still searching for her.

The other two victims were picked up at approximately 4:30 PM the same day after commercial fishermen saw them in the water. Rescue crews transported the two victims to a local hospital. Their conditions were not immediately made available.

“They were in the water a good while,” said Ms. Johnson.

Ms. Harris was last seen swimming toward Mackay Island. She has blonde hair and was reported to be wearing yellow shorts and a black t-shirt at the time she went missing.

The local fire department and volunteers are assisting the Coast Guard in their search for the missing Virginia woman.

There was no indication as to what may have caused the boat to capsize in the first place. However, it was raining on the morning the boat accident occurred.
