Weather hampering efforts to contain expanding oil spill

Posted on Apr 24, 2010

High winds, rain and turbulent seas have halted, for now, the oil cleanup from the sunken Deepwater Horizon platform.

Deepwater Horizon rig burns
Oil has spread seven miles toward shore

By Friday the oil had spread to a sheen eight miles long and two miles wide about 50 miles off the Louisiana coast. It had moved seven miles north of the disaster site in the direction of the coastline. So far no wildlife damage has been encountered.

The Coast Guard said that the cleanup will resume once the weather clears. Winds gusting up to 25 miles per hour are forecast into Sunday.

BP, the lead cleanup responder and operator of the rig, is deploying 32 vessels to soak up the oil along with remote control vehicles to assess the well. Marine Spill Response Corp. is also supplying equipment.

11 workers are presumed dead from the explosion and fireball that engulfed the rig Tuesday night.
