The Coast Guard said that Wednesday’s controlled test burn of the Gulf of Mexico oil slick was a success and will move forward en masse with the burning.

Several thousand gallons of oil were surrounded by a 500-foot boom, towed to a remote area, ignited with hand flares and burned for an hour. There will be no fires at night.

Greg Pollock of the Texas General Land Office said that the residual oil left over after the burn poses no threat to the environment “because it won’t coat an animal” and turns into a hardened ball that can easily be picked up.
