A Washington boat accident involving a small vessel claims the life of one person and requires four others to be rescued after their boat capsizes. The maritime accident took place at approximately 7:30 on Saturday morning, May 7, 2011, in the Puget Sound near Camano Head.
According to the U. S. Coast Guard, an 18-foot recreational boat capsized and sank near Camano Head sending five people into the frigid waters. Crews transported one man to Tulalip Marina, where paramedics pronounced him dead.
Four others were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard, including a 14-year-old boy, and were administered first aid for hypothermia. A Coast Guard rescuer located the boy underneath the vessel and was able to rescue him. The boy was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he was treated for injuries sustained in the maritime accident.
The U.S. Coast Guard received the distress call at approximately 7:30 AM. They also reported that none of the victims were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.
The Washington boat accident is still under investigation by local authorities. The exact cause of the accident has yet to be determined. However, reports indicate that the boat may have been hit and swamped by two waves.
