Americans are asking a lot of questions and are demanding answers about the Transocean rig explosion, which has been referred to as the deadliest U.S. rig accident in 23 years. How could this tragic event have happened? How safe is the offshore industry?
Houston maritime attorney Brian Beckcom has been receiving numerous calls from the media wanting to know his take on this horrific rig explosion. He has already been contacted by a reporter with the Wall Street Journal and has completed a 20-minute radio interview with KUT 90.5 FM in Austin. There are numerous questions about the offshore industry’s safety record and whether workers are too afraid of being blackballed in the industry to speak up about safety issues.
This Transocean oil rig accident is not the first one in the offshore industry. Brian represented a young man just six years ago, who was injured on a Transocean rig that exploded near Galveston, Texas. One person was killed in the blast and many more were injured.
As far as being blackballed, Brian says that is a concern for many injured maritime workers. He usually tells his clients that it is a risk if they have a history of filing lawsuits against their employers. However, if they don’t have this track record and have a legitimate claim, they won’t be blackballed. If a maritime company does try to blackball one of Brian’s clients, he will do something about it.
