Victims’ relatives filing lawsuits in Gulf oil platform explosion

Posted on Apr 22, 2010

Relatives of a missing worker aboard the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that exploded filed a lawsuit on the same day it sank in the Gulf of Mexico.

The family of Shane Roshito, Amite, Mississippi, filed the suit against Transocean Ltd, the platform’s owner, and BP oil corporation, the platform’s operator. The suit charges negligence and was filed Thursday in New Orleans. Roshito’s family claims that he was thrown overboard and is believed to be dead.

11 workers are missing and the Coast Guard has conducted at least 12 air and five boat searches covering 1,940 square miles. 115 workers evacuated onto a supply boat and 17 of them were transported to hospitals with critical injuries.

An explosion rocked the platform Tuesday night. Responder vessels attempted to stabilize it for over one day by blasting the flames with water but the structure sank.
