UAE indicts ship captain and 2 others for firearms possession

Posted on Dec 29, 2011

The high court of the United Arab Emirates has indicted the captain and two other persons for possession of firearms on the vessel.

The captain maintained that the weapons were for anti-piracy defense.
Possessing firearms without a permit is against in the law in UAE and in most port-states around the world.

The Federal Supreme Court rejected the claims that the firearms were needed for protection against Somali pirates.

UAE coast guard units found and seized two Russian-made Kalashinikov machine guns and ammunition that were hidden inside a bag in the engine room while the vessel was berthed for repairs at Sharjah’s Hamirya port, press reports said.

Reports did not make it clear if the weapons were intended to be used by crewmembers or passed off to anti-piracy security teams.

The court took into consideration the fact that the defendants had no prior criminal record in the country and suspended their jail terms and fines. They were ordered deported, reported “Emarat Al Youm” newspaper.

The defendants were only identified as “foreigners” and no information was released about the vessel.
