A heavy weather Coast Guard training exercise on Lake Ontario turned into a real life emergency last week when crewmembers were evacuated after a severe roll.
One of two 47-foot Motor Lifeboats (MLBs) took a roll exceeding 90 degrees at approximately 3:30 p.m. on November 17th a half mile north of Oswego Harbor, New York. Five crewmembers were evacuated. Two were hospitalized. One had a head wound and another suffered a shoulder injury. The other three were evaluated and released.
According to the Coast Guard, the 30 mph winds and 12-14 foot waves fell within the exercise’s allowable parameters of 57 mph winds and 30-foot waves.
The training is used to qualify persons in heavy weather operations. The cause of the accident is being investigated.
