A safety drill leaves three maritime workers injured after their rescue boat capsizes off the Isle of Wight. The incident took place at approximately 11:45 AM on Monday morning, September 13, 2010.
According to reports, nine maritime workers from the tanker British Cormorant were conducting a drill involving a rescue boat off the Isle of Wight when one of the lines snapped. The rescue boat capsized sending six men into the water.
A Coastguard rescue helicopter from Lee-on-the-Solent was scrambled. The Coastguard rescued the six men as they bobbed in the water.
The accident left three of the seamen on the ship with injuries. One of the victims was flown to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham. He has been reported as suffering spinal injuries. The conditions of the three injured seamen were not immediately made known.
“The Coastguard rescue helicopter provided a swift recovery to the six crewmen in the water,” said Lucy Tanner, Watch Manger with the Solent Coastguard. “Fortunately, all were wearing lifejackets which insured that they all remained afloat and visible to the aircraft crew.”
The unfortunate maritime accident is still being investigating by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, as well as the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.
