Texas boaters will have to take education course

Posted on Jan 16, 2012

The Texas Legislature has passed a law requiring many recreational boat operators to take an approved boater education course.

The law applies to those born on or after Sept. 1, 1993 who operate boats with more than 15-horsepower or a wind-blown boat greater than 14 feet. These operators must have passed a state-approved boater education course and carry proof of this while operating the vessels.

Details on the boater education course may be found on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website at www.tpwd.state.tx.us.

The Legislature also raised the minimum boat accident property damage amounts triggering mandatory reporting from $500 to $2,000.
