A Sonoma County fishing boat accident claims the life of a man after the boat he was crab fishing on capsized in rough seas. The incident took place on Tuesday morning, November 23, 2010, north of Bodega Bay.
According to Sonoma County Sheriff’s Sgt Ed Hoener, a 21-foot Cabo yacht encountered rough seas, near gale force winds, took on water and then capsized. The accident occurred south of Goat Rock near Jenner.
The fishing boat accident claimed the life of 71-year-old Glenn Shoji Iwamoto who made the trip to the Sonoma Coast with a group of friends from Sacramento. Hoener reported that Iwamoto was unresponsive when his friends recovered his body from the cold waters and that they administered CPR.
Before overturning, the fishermen were able to put out a distress call to their friends who were in another boat.
The U.S. Coast Guard arrived on the scene at 9:13 AM and continued to perform CPR on Iwamoto. The Bodega Bay Fire Department pronounced him dead a short time later.
Rescue crews transported two other victims to Palm Drive Hospital in Sebastopol and Kaiser Medical Center in Santa Rosa where they were treated for hyperthermia.
“It happened so quick,” said Russ Kimura, who was operating the second boat.
The fatal Sonoma County boating accident is still under investigation.
