Somali pirates make farthest attack offshore, 3 Thai vessels hijacked

Posted on Apr 20, 2010

Three Thai fishing vessels with 77 crew were hijacked over 1,200 miles offshore Sunday, according to the EU Naval Force. That’s believed to be the farthest attack off of Somalia to date. The International Maritime Bureau says the incidents bring the total of ships being held for ransom to 14 with 305 crew held hostage.

The Thai vessels are the MV Prantalay 11, 12 and 14 and they are owned by PT Interfishery Ltd.

The attacks occurred more than 600 miles outside the area normally patrolled by warships.

"Once they start attacking that far out, you're not even really talking about the Somali basin or areas of water that have any connection with Somalia," said piracy expert Roger Middleton of the British think tank Chatham House.
