An elderly lady became ill onboard a Holland American Line cruise ship and had to be evacuated by helicopter. She was taken to a San Diego area hospital. The M.S. Oosterdam was approximately 180 mile southwest of San Diego when the United States Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched.
The unidentified 75-year-old female passenger became ill, and along with the ship’s nurse, was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla on Friday, November 12, 2010. There were no details concerning her illness immediately made available.
The helicopter was dispatched from the Coast Guard’s San Diego station. A second aircraft from Sacramento was dispatched to help locate the Holland American Line cruise ship.
The M.S. Oosterdam is reported as offering cruises from San Diego to sights along Mexico’s Pacific Coast. It was unclear as to what point in the cruise the incident occurred. No other details were made known regarding the extent of the illness and what may have caused the woman to become ill.
The evacuation occurred the same week that cruise ship Carnival Splendor experienced an engine fire and became disabled requiring the 952-foot ship to be towed into San Diego.
