Ship collides with fishing vessel off Boston coast

Posted on Jan 18, 2011

Three fishermen and their boat were pulled to safety by the Coast Guard after colliding with a bulk carrier 20 miles southeast of Hull, MA at 5 p.m. on Jan. 11.

USCG Sector Boston picked up the VHF Ch. 16 distress call from the 600-foot West Bay. Air Station Cape Cod responded to the scene with a Coast Guard rescue helicopter and Station Point Allerton deployed a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew.

The helicopter lowered a baling pump to the 51-foot Michael Brandon, which suffered extensive bow damage. However, efforts to stabilize the flooding and repair the boat offshore failed so it was towed to Scituate, MA.

The accident is under investigation.
