On June 23, 2011, an Alabama maritime accident seriously injured 20-year-old Tyler McConnell. The young man had been riding on a Jet Ski alongside his sister, Ashley, and mother, Harriett, 250 meters off the shore of Flora-Bama when he was knocked into the water. He felt himself being bitten by something, and his mother then noticed blood in the water surrounding him. While authorities initially believed he was bitten by a barracuda, they later said that they think a spinner shark attacked him.
Luckily, McConnell was removed from the water and taken to a hospital for treatment before anything else could go wrong. Three days later, McConnell left the hospital in a wheelchair - still under heavy medication, but alive and in one piece. He has sworn off future Jet Ski riding.
Most Alabama offshore injuries are not so dramatic. Instead of involving surprise shark attacks, they are more pedestrian events, like slip and falls on slippery docks, twisted ankles, and exposure to particulate matter or other toxic elements. But while such Alabama offshore injuries do not grab headlines as easily, they are no less devastating. Indeed, victims may often feel confused, overloaded, and dismayed by their medical crises.
