A Seattle boat accident involving a water taxi leaves at least seven passengers injured after the catamaran plowed into a dock. The incident took place on Sunday, September 26, 2010, on the Alaskan Way seawall.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, a King County Water Taxi catamaran experienced possible mechanical failure and slammed into the dock. Passengers onboard the vessel, the Rachel Marie, indicated that the captain issued a warning announcement seconds before the accident occurred. At least seven passengers were reported as being injured in the collision
“Nobody was passed out, people were frantic, some contusions and bleeding,” said U.S. Coastguard Petty Officer Matthew Mehs, who witnessed the accident and jumped into the water to administer first aid.
The transportation department has reported that the captain of the vessel was immediately placed on administrative leave pending the results of a drug and alcohol test, which is considered standard operating procedure.
The Rachel Marie sustained structural damage, as well as some broken windows. The extent of the structural damage has not yet been determined.
It was also reported that the same water taxi was involved in a previous accident in June 2010. Fortunately, the vessel was without passengers.
The maritime accident is still under investigation by the King County Department of Transportation and the U.S. Coast Guard.
