The U.S. Coast Guard and the Mexican Navy have officially called off search efforts in the Sea of Cortez for seven sports fishermen from California missing since July 3 when their boat capsized.
The Coast Guard deployed C-130 cargo planes and HH-60 Jayhawk helicopters in the search which covered over 7,000 square miles.
The missing persons were part of a 43 person group aboard the Erik, a 115-chartered fishing boat that capsized in a storm in the early morning hours of July 3
35 people swam to shore or were rescued in the water. Mexican police recovered one person who died.
Search and rescue teams looked for the remaining seven persons in the hopes that the warm waters would allow them to survive but "no signs of the missing men were found," said USCG Rear Admiral Joseph "Pepe" Castillo.
"Our deepest sympathies go out to all those impacted by this tragic incident," he said.
