Posted on Apr 23, 2010

The Coast Guard officially called off the search Friday for the 11 missing workers of the oil platform that exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico.

Officials believe they did not make it off the Deepwater Horizon when it exploded Tuesday night.

"The time of reasonable expectation of survivability has passed," said Rear Adm. Mary Landry.

The subsequent blaze engulfed the structure. 115 workers made it safely aboard a work boat and reached shore. Several workers were critically injured and transported to Gulf Coast hospitals.

A three day air and sea search covered nearly 2,000 square miles around the area where the rig sank Thursday 52 miles southeast of Venice, Louisiana.

The platform was owned by Transocean Ltd of Houston and operated by BP.

The cause of the explosion has not been announced.
