Search halted for U.S. Chief Mate who fell overboard near Guam

Posted on Mar 11, 2011

The Coast Guard called off the search for a chief mate who fell from the bridge wing of a U.S. flag ship near Guam.

30 knot winds and 7 foot seas led to the suspension of the search for the missing crew member who fell from the USNS Major Stephen W. Pless on Feb. 27.

The captain of the Waterman Steamship Corp. vessel immediately ordered a man overboard maneuver. Two lighted life rings and an orange smoke canister were thrown over. The crew tried to launch both lifeboats into the water but the rough conditions halted the operation.

A Navy search-and-rescue helicopter spotted the crewmember in the water but the crew was unable to recover him in the weather.

The incident is under investigation.
