The pungent odor of fuel oil permeates the air and red-dye diesel can still be seen from the Savannah, Georgia waterfront after a ship accident Sunday. Over 5,000 feet of boom is being deployed to try to contain the 6,500 gallons spilled into the Savannah River.
The river was closed for several hours Sunday after the hull was punctured and starboard fuel tank ruptured on the M/V Liberty, a 625-foot car carrier, while the vessel was leaving the dock in the Port of Savannah.
The river was re-opened Monday and containment crews are working to contain the fuel with booms and absorbent “sausage.”
Investigators have not yet announced the cause of the accident.
The Liberty is owned by American Roll-on Roll-off Carrier LLC and operated by Crowley Maritime Corp.
