A San Diego boat accident involving a single vessel claims the lives of two people and leaves eight others injured after the sailboat they are on capsizes. The incident took place at approximately 5:00 PM on Sunday evening, March 27, 2011, in the San Diego Bay.
According to San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesperson, Maurice Luque, a sailboat carrying 10 people capsized and sank near Shelter Island. Harbor police were able to retrieve all 10 people. Unfortunately, two men were declared dead at the scene. Eight other victims were taken to the hospital and treated for injures sustained in the boating accident.
Among the victims were two children. They were released from the hospital shortly after being treated. A female victim was treated for hypothermia at UCSD Medical Center.
The Harbor Police responded to the sinking after being notified of the accident by a Navy vessel. The U.S. Coast Guard also responded to the accident.
"They were pulling people out of the water," said Port of San Diego spokesperson Marguerite Elicone. "There were also civilians assisting in pulling people out of the water."
The fatal San Diego boat accident is still under investigation. Investigators have not given any indication as to what may have caused the sailboat to capsize and sink.
