Salvage efforts underway for sunken vessel off Port Arthur

Posted on Dec 24, 2011

Efforts are being undertaken by the Coast Guard and International Marine, LLC to contain and recover any possible leaking fuel from a utility vessel that capsized off the Texas Gulf Coast earlier this month.
The Int’l Hunter hit a submerged object and sank 25 miles southeast of the Sabine Jetties in Port Arthur on Dec. 13. It was carrying lube oil and diesel. Seven men abandoned the vessel in life rafts and were safely recovered within one hour.
The Coast Guard found a light oil sheen they believed to be diesel fuel which is expected to dissipate and not threaten land. A spill recovery vessel has been on standby in the event of a spill.
The vessel is stable on the sea bed and workers have been involved in salvage operations.
Vessel owner International Marine said it is finishing up baseline and damage surveys and then divers will secure fuel vents.
Remaining fuel will reportedly be pumped into storage tanks on a derrick barge.
