Patuxent River Boating Accident Claims the Life of a Port Republic Man

Posted on Nov 14, 2010

A Patuxent boating accident claims the life of a Port Republic man after the fishing boat he was on took a large wave over the stern and sank. The incident took place at approximately 6:30 PM on Saturday evening, November 6, 2010.

According to police, three men were returning from a fishing trip when the 20-foot Wellcraft vessel experienced engine problems. Thomas Eric Johnson, 46, of Hollywood, anchored the vessel and called for assistance. That is when a large wave towered over the stern of the vessel and sank it.

All three boaters put on life jackets and jumped into the water, according to the police report. The other two passengers have been identified as Julius Lamond Camp, 37, of Leonardtown, and Timothy Dale Bourne, 50, of Port Republic.

A jet skier responded to the call and was able to rescue Johnson and Camp. Rescue crews transported the men to Calvert Memorial Hospital where they were treated for hyperthermia. Unfortunately, there was no sign of Bourne.

Bourne’s body was located the next day approximately 120 yards south of where the boat sank by members of the Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department and the Calvert County Dive team.

A second boating accident was reported in the area earlier in the day. A boat was reported as taking on water requiring units from NRP and Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department to rescue five boaters. It was unclear if anyone was injured in the incident.
