Outbreak of Illness Onboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship

Posted on Jan 16, 2011

An outbreak of illness onboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship affects 150 passengers and causes a slight delay to the ship’s next voyage. The incident was reported on January 3, 2011 onboard Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas.

According to Royal Caribbean, 150 of the 2,336 onboard the Radiance of the Seas were struck by a gastro-intestinal illness while onboard the cruise ship. Three crew members were also affected by the illness. Many of the sick victims experienced diarrhea and vomiting as a result.

The Radiance of the Seas was on a five-night sailing voyage from Tampa, Florida to Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico when the illness broke out.

Royal Caribbean spokesperson Cynthia Martinez reported that those affected by the illness responded well to over-the-counter medications provided by the cruise ship’s medical team. She also indicated that the illness is typically spread through hand-to-hand contact.

Ms. Martinez reported that the ship’s crew removed anything that multiple guests touched, such as utensils and salt and pepper shakers.

The cruise ship’s next trip was delayed approximately 5 hours, as crews rushed to sanitize the ship before the next group of passengers got onboard.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 14 similar outbreaks in 2010 onboard cruise ships calling at U.S. ports.
