Oregon man presumed dead after falling from parade vessel in Columbia River

Posted on Dec 12, 2011

A St. Helens, Oregon man is presumed dead after falling into the Columbia River from a “Christmas Ship” that had participated in a parade 90 minutes earlier.

John Sullivan, 43, was a guest Saturday night aboard the 65-foot Trilogy which was docked in St. Helens. He was on the back end of the upper deck when he slipped and fell onto the swimboard and then went into the river.

Another person tossed him a life ring that was tethered onto the vessel but he could not reach it, said John Heitman, president of the Christmas Ship organization.

His body had not been recovered as of Sunday night.

This was the first time the Trinity had taken part in the parade. Christmas Ship is an organization that supports safety training and emphasizes the use of personal floatation devices, the organization said.

The boat was owned by a Scappoose, Ore. man.

The St. Helens Police Dept. is investigating the accident and leading search and recovery efforts.
