An explosion sparked from welding a tank holding water and oil at the dock in Gibraltar injured 12 passengers aboard a cruise ship docked there on Tuesday.
The passengers on the Miami-based Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas suffered injuries ranging from slight burns to a broken shoulder. The company described the injuries as minor and said all were treated aboard the ship.
The Spanish welder suffered life threatening injuries and was to be transferred to a burn unit in nearby Seville, Spain, said a statement released by the Gibraltar government.
The ship immediately pulled away from the dock and departed safely for Cannes, France, the next scheduled stop on its 14 day voyage that began Saturday in Southampton, England.
Two passengers who were ashore at the time of the explosion were reportedly unharmed.
