Obama blasts oil companies with both barrels

Posted on May 15, 2010

President Obama expressed outrage Friday at the oil companies’ failure to accept responsibility for their roles in the Gulf of Mexico gusher.

“I will not tolerate more finger pointing or irresponsibility,” he said about the “ridiculous spectacle” of company executives blaming each other at congressional hearings this past week. Executives from British Petroleum, Transocean and Halliburton testified before Congress.

The President called for a “top to bottom” overhaul of the Minerals Management Service, which oversees drilling.  Investigators are looking into whether the MMS allowed operators to drill in the Gulf without issuing permits.

Some experts believe the amount of oil pouring into the Gulf in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon explosion and sinking April 20 is up to 10 times greater than the 5,000 barrels per day claimed by BP.
