The Associated Press reported Friday that the Norwegian cruise ship MS Nordlys is listing dangerously at a 21.7 degree angle. That’s beyond the critical mark of 20 degrees, said Norwegian Police Chief Jon Steven Hasseldal.

Three pumps were placed inside the ship by a Dutch salvage team Friday morning. A floating crane was being used to stabilize the vessel. Holes were drilled into the hull for insertion of fire hoses.

Two crew members died and 260 persons were evacuated Thursday morning from an engine room fire suspected to be caused by an explosion unrelated to terrorism or sabotage, said police. However, the specific cause is not yet known.

Nine persons were sent to the hospital, two of them suffering serious injuries from burns and smoke inhalation. Three rescue workers were treated for mild smoke inhalation injuries.

The fire occurred en route to Aalesund, 230 miles northwest of Oslo. All 207 passengers were safely evacuated either into lifeboats or after the ship docked.

Hurtigruten, the company that owns the ship, was arranging to provide money and emergency passports for passengers who were forced to leave their personal items on the ship.

However, providing alternative transportation for those persons who wanted to resume the journey was a problem, said CEO Olav Fjell.
