A Nantucket barge accident leaves an employee in serious condition after being pinned between a wharf and a barge. The incident took place on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at the Steamboat Wharf.
According to reports, workers were in the process of untying a barge after unloading material at the wharf when a Toscana Corporation employee became pinned between the wharf and the barge and then fell into the water. The man’s fellow employees were able to retrieve him out of the frigid waters before emergency crews arrived on the scene.
Rescue crews transported the unidentified man to Nantucket Cottage Hospital (NCH) where he was treated for injuries sustained in the barge accident. According to NCH spokesperson Bill Ferrall, the maritime worker was then flown by the U.S. Coast Guard to a Boston hospital where he was listed in serious condition.
