Mississippi River bridge closed after barge strike during flooding

Posted on May 10, 2011

The I-155 bridge that crosses the Mississippi River between Tennessee and the Missouri Bootheel was closed for three hours after being struck by a barge on May 3.

The accident occurred after the northbound barge reportedly lost power mid-day. Though the River was at or near historically high levels, it was uncertain whether the flooding was a contributing factor to the accident. However, the Coast Guard released a warning to Pittsburgh barge operators just four days earlier stating that flooding was causing a higher than normal rate of accidents.

There were no reports of injuries or chemicals spilled.

The bridge is about 75 miles north of Memphis. It was reopened at 4:00 p.m. that afternoon.
