A Mississippi boating accident involving two vessels has claimed the life of one man and left another injured. The incident took place at approximately 6:30 AM on Thursday, June 16, 2011, near the Breton Sound Marina.
According to reports, an 18-foot aluminum boat and a 25-foot fiberglass boat collided a few miles from the Breton Sound Marina. The boats were carrying nine people when the vessels collided. One of the boats was coming back from a fishing trip while the second was going out to catch shrimp.
The crash, which occurred in about 150 feet of water, claimed the life of one man and injured another. The extent of his injuries was not immediately made available. Their identities were not released by authorities.
Glenn Sanchez, the owner of the Breton Sound Marina, where the two boats launched from, stated that the closure of the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet may have played a role in the two-vessel crash.
"We've been predicting this ever since they put in that rock dam," said Mr. Sanchez . "The spoil canal is so much narrower and it has a lot of twists and turns without any kind of markings. It was basically an accident waiting to happen."
The fatal two-boat accident is still under investigation by local authorities.
