Mississippi Attorney Gen. wants Judge to monitor BP fund administrator

Posted on Apr 21, 2011

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood asked U.S. District Judge Carl Barbieri of New Orleans to conduct an independent audit of BP Plc fund administrator Ken Feinberg's Gulf Coast Claims Facility.

Hood accused Feinberg of scaring financially desperate claimants into agreeing to fast and insufficient settlements so that they could not later sue BP for damages. Tactics allegedly included imposing "unreasonable" required documentation and then using the inability to produce records as a basis to deny legitimate claims.

Feinberg's fund has paid just 9 percent of individual interim claims and 3 percent of interim business claims, Hood alleges.

Feinberg denied Hood's claims and said they almost border on defamation.
