A Massachusetts diving accident has claimed the life of a local man while searching for lobsters off of Provincetown. The incident took place on Monday, May 23, 2011, near Hatches Harbor.
According to reports, 27-year-old Sean Strakele was diving from the vessel Chase when the fatal maritime accident occurred. The boat's owner, John Baldwin, wrote in his log that Mr. Strakele entered the water at 6:03 AM but never logged a time for when the diver came out of the water.
"I stopped seeing the bubbles," said Mr. Baldwin. Baldwin also indicated that he didn't immediately worry because it is somewhat common to lose sight of the bubbles, particularly in rough waters.
A fellow lobster diver, Michael Packard, located Mr. Strakele's body on Wednesday at approximately 6:50 AM and contacted the U.S. Coast Guard.
Mr. Strakele's body was recovered later that morning at approximately 10:30 AM in 56 feet of water nearly 100 yards from where he was originally dropped in the water.
"It was rough near where I put him down," Mr. Baldwin said. "I put him on the top of the bank."
Mr. Packard indicated that victim was still wearing his diving weight belt when he found his body. A diver generally releases the weigh belt and shoots to the surface when trouble occurs.
