Man placed in medically induced coma after shipyard accident

Posted on Feb 20, 2011

A man suffered serious injuries after being struck by a falling object in a California shipyard. While dissembling a 124-foot barge at Marine Group Boat Works shipyard in Chula Vista on the evening of Feb. 13, a section he believed to be still attached broke loose and fell onto his face and head. Even though he wore a hard hat, his trachea was sliced and there were severe cuts to his face. By the time Chula Vista police arrived, the victim was already transported by fire crews to UCSD Medical Center. There, he was placed in a medically induced coma. Police believe the incident was an industrial accident and that there was no foul play.
