Man missing from boating accident near Shreveport

Rescue workers continued to search the Red River south of Shreveport, La. for an east Texas man missing from a boat accident since Wednesday.

Dan Stanley, 63, and his cousin Jerry Smith, 64, were tossed from their fishing boat into the water when it possibly struck a rock jetty Wednesday afternoon near River Bend Marina in Elm Grove. The water may have been 50 feet deep. Neither person was wearing a life jacket, said Bossier sheriff spokesman Bill Davis.

Smith was able to make it onto a jetty where he was discovered by a passing boater. He was airlifted to a hospital just before 5 p.m. and was reportedly in fair condition with a head injury, a possible leg fracture and hypothermia from the 50 degree water.

Stanley had not turned up at last report. Rescue teams scoured the area until nightfall and resumed the search the next morning with a cadaver dog.

"With temperatures as low as it is, a body will not float for sometimes several weeks," said Wesley Walker of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
