Man Missing After California Tugboat Accident

Posted on May 12, 2011

A California tugboat accident involving a 43-foot vessel may have claimed the life of one man and sent another to a local hospital. The maritime accident took place at approximately 2:00 on Sunday afternoon, April 10, 2011, near Ocean Beach in San Francisco.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, two men were operating the 43-foot tugboat called "Richardson's Bay" and were traveling to retrieve a lost skiff off of Ocean Beach when the vessel capsized. Both men abandoned the tugboat.

One of the men, a 53-year-old, was found in the water wearing a life ring. Rescue crews retrieved the man and transported him to a local hospital where he was treated for shock and mild hypothermia. His condition was not immediately made known.

Rescue crews never recovered the second man, a 52-year-old San Anselmo resident. Unfortunately, the U.S. Coast Guard called off the search. The man is presumed dead. He was believed to have been with an inflatable boat, which was discovered on shore along with a life jacket. There was no sign of the man.

The California tugboat accident is still under investigation by local authorities. The exact cause of the maritime accident has yet to be determined. Neither man's identity was immediately released by officials.
