A Louisiana oil rig fire involving an inactive gas well has left at least three workers injured after a service rig caught fire. The incident took place on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, about 20 miles southeast of New Orleans.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, an oil service rig caught fire in Bayou Perot while crews were working on an inactive gas well. The rig was in the process of converting the inactive gas well for an injection disposal of waste saltwater.
A Coast Guard spokesperson reported that at least three workers were injured as a result of the accident. No details concerning the extent of those injuries were immediately made available.
The Coast Guard also reported that the fire went out on its own after burning for only a short period of time. The Coast Guard was quick to indicate that there was no pollution as a result of the fire.
The accident comes within a year of BP’s oil rig explosion onboard the Deepwater Horizon that claimed the lives of 11 maritime workers and triggered the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.
The Louisiana oil rig fire is still under investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities.
