Large oil sheen spotted in the Gulf

Posted on Mar 21, 2011

Nearly one year after the Deepwater Horizon disaster that triggered the Gulf oil spill, a rapidly expanding oil sheen has been spotted in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Associated Press reported that the Coast Guard confirmed a substance floating on the surface. A cutter was being deployed to take samples to determine exactly what the substance is and a plane was to fly over the area.

The Times-Picayune reported that the National Response Center received two calls from persons spotting sheens. One pilot reported a slick approximately one half-mile long by one-half mile wide. Another pilot, Bonny Schumaker with environmental nonprofit "On Wings of Care," reported a 100 mile long slick off of Grand Isle, Louisiana, and told oilspillaction.com that it was rapidly expanding.

The Coast Guard is focusing its search around the Matterhorn well site, which is located about 20 miles north of the Deepwater Horizon. Located within the Matterhorn filed is a deepwater platform owned by W&T Technology.

Coast Guard spokeswomen Casey Ranel said there is a possibility the sheen is from silt being dredged from the mouth of the Mississippi River.
