A Somali pirate has been killed for the first time in a gunfight with armed security.
The shootout took place Tuesday in a clash between security guards aboard the Panamanian flagged M/V Almezaan and pirates attacking in two skiffs.
An EU Naval Force frigate in the area launched a helicopter and located the attacking party, along with their mother ship. The body of a pirate killed in the battle was found, dead from small caliber gunshot wounds. Seven suspected pirates were apprehended.
Numerous bullet impacts were found on the skiffs along with a cache of different caliber ammunition.
Authorities were planning to turn the body over to Somali authorities and may transfer the pirate suspects to the Seychelles or Kenya.
Maritime analysts expect the incident to add to the debate on whether armed security is a deterrent to piracy or only serves to escalate the violence.
