Injured chief mate airlifted off Bermuda

Posted on Dec 17, 2010

A Coast Guard helicopter team that deployed in harsh conditions from North Carolina successfully medivacced a crewmember with a broken arm about 400 miles northeast of Bermuda Thursday morning. The 31-year-old chief mate from the Turkish flagged Askabat also had an open wound with heavy bleeding. Two Coast Guard helicopter teams took off on the rescue mission from Air Station Elizabeth City Wednesday and stopped in Bermuda for refueling because of the far distance. Then, nearly 50 mph winds and 15-foot seas grounded the crews in Bermuda overnight. At 5:40 a.m. the next morning, the chief mate was winched aboard a helicopter and taken to Bermuda for treatment. The cause of his injuries was not released.
