Last week, Utah police confirmed that a 46-year-old duck hunter sustained a hunting related boat injury when a dog shot him in the buttocks with a 12-gauge shotgun.
The victim and his friend went duck hunting on Great Salt Lake last weekend. The soon-to-be-dog-shooting victim hopped out of his boat to set up decoys to attract ducks. While the man was occupied, his trusted canine back on the boat “got excited” and started to jump around. The dog apparently landed on the gun and caused the discharge.
The victim was hit with approximately 27 pellets of a birdshot from just 10 feet away. Fortunately for him, his injury was not serious, since he had been wearing thick trousers designed for wading in the marsh. The injured man and his companion hiked out to the road and called 911. Doctors at a local hospital extracted the birdshot and released him.
It’s easy to file the story as another quirky “man bites dog” incident – a humorous event of expectations getting suddenly and unexpectedly reversed. However, the story is something of a cautionary tale. Always ensure that you handle firearms properly, and seek legal advice if you suffer a boat-related injury.
