Heartbreaking Boat Accident in Bulgaria Claims Life of "Expendables 2" Stuntman

Posted on Nov 24, 2011

Representatives of NU Image/Millennium Films have confirmed that a stuntman working in Bulgaria on the movie, Expendables 2, died in a boat accident while filming at the Ognyanovo Dam outside the Bulgarian capital of Sofia.

Expendables 2, which has been heralded by some movie-watchers as former CA Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's "comeback movie" as an action star, has been bedeviled by problems. According to an AP report: The [unnamed] stuntman was killed during an accident involving a rubber boat and an explosion...two stuntmen were involved in the scene with the second suffering serious injuries, but he is now said to be in stable condition."

A separate report confirmed that the stars of the film - including Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Jason Statham - were not on set when the disaster struck. The Washington Post reports that Image/Millennium Films is investigating the cause of the disaster. The movie is expected to hit theatres next August.

Obviously, without learning more details about the physics of the accident, the safety precautions that were (or were not) employed, and other relevant information, it is impossible to even speculate on potentially liable parties in this case (if any liable parties exist). However, the story does highlight a crucial lesson: even experienced, highly-trained specialists (like stuntmen) can be caught off guard and injured, or even killed, by surprising events in the water.

So many dynamic factors can be involved in maritime accidents, including unpredictable weather, structural defects with the boat or any of its components, poor training, DUI boating, unexpected hazards, and simple bad luck. To tease apart the relevant factors in your case - or in any case - you need to act quickly to collect relevant evidence and begin the process of extracting order from chaos in order to contextualize the disaster.
