Lawyers for victims of the Deepwater Horizon (DH) explosion and Gulf oil spill say that BP Plc and other companies involved in the rig’s operation are trying to delay the court cases from moving forward. At a hearing Wednesday before U.S. District Court Judge Carl Barbier in New Orleans, the plaintiffs' attorneys argued that the cases should be heard within one year and requested that the claims should be divided into four different categories. For example, DH victims’ families should have their claims heard separately from the spill victims. The defendants' lawyers called the argument for a quick process to be “premature and overly ambitious.”
