13 crew members have been safely evacuated from a Gulf of Mexico oil platform after it exploded this morning. The rig sits in 2,500 feet of water located west of the Deepwater Horizon site and about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay on the central Louisiana coast. A commercial helicopter flying over the area first spotted the flames coming from the platform at approximately 9:30 a.m. A Coast Guard spokesman said all crew members are alive and have been accounted for. There is one person injured; the extent of the injury is not yet known. The survivors were retrieved from the water wearing survival suits. It has not been confirmed if oil is leaking from the site. The platform is owned by Marine Energy of Houston.
