A Gulf of Mexico oil rig accident results in a fire that sends two maritime workers to the hospital. The incident took place on Sunday, March 6, 2011, approximately 50 miles off Grand Isle in the Gulf region.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the Arena Energy owned GI 102A oil production platform caught fire on Sunday. Two maritime workers were required to use a life capsule to escape the flames and were picked up by a nearby vessel.
Rescue crews transported the two unidentified victims to a hospital in Marrero. The extent of their injuries, if any, was not immediately made available.
Arena Energy has reported that the oil rig had been shut down for approximately two weeks and was not in production when the platform caught fire. The Bureau of Oceans and Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE), will conduct the investigation to determine what caused the flames to erupt.
The Coast Guard reported that Arena Energy hired firefighting officials in the event the fire reignited. The Coast Guard also indicated that they did not observe any pollution and that they established a 1,000 yard security zone around the accident scene, as well as created temporary flight restrictions.
