Grounded cargo ship in N. Zealand suspected of cutting corner on chart

Posted on Oct 15, 2011

The New Zealand environment minister believes the cargo ship that remains grounded on a reef may have taken a shortcut on the navigation chart.

"It appears from the charts that they were in a rush to get to port, went full bore, cut the corner, and hit the reef," Nick Smith told national television station TV3.
Both the Rena’s captain and the watch officer at the time of the grounding face up to one year in prison after being charged with operating a vessel causing unnecessary danger or risk.
Oil has been leaking from the gashed ship which struck the reef near the resort of Tauranga off of North Island on Oct. 5.
An estimated 330 tons of fuel oil have leaked into the ocean, killing and soaking hundreds of birds. Another 1,346 tons remain aboard. 88 containers have fallen overboard.
Salvage workers hoped to start discharging the remaining oil onto a fuel barge. Rough seas had slowed down earlier cleanup efforts.
The incident has been called the worst maritime disaster in New Zealand history.
The ship is owned by Greek-based Costamarer Inc.
