Florida Boating Accident Claims the Life of Dad, Sends Son to Hospital

Posted on Jun 05, 2011

A Florida boating accident involving an 18-foot skiff claims the life of a dad and sends his 6-year-old son to the hospital after a fishing trip goes wrong. The maritime accident took place at approximately 9:30 on Friday evening, May 24, 2011, near Sunshine Skyway.

According to reports, Phong Quoc Ngo, 44, of Tampa, went fishing with his 6-year-old son and two friends for several hours on Friday. As the boat was returning to the boat ramp, the driver allegedly made a sharp turn, causing the boat to lurch. Everyone in the boat was ejected into the water.

Mr. Ngo's son, Anthony, who was wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident, went under the water briefly before his dad was able to pull him up. Anthony later reported seeing a lot of water going into his dad's mouth. Unfortunately, Mr. Ngo was eventually pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the accident.

"He saved my life," said Anthony.

Rescue crews transported Anthony to a nearby hospital where he was eventually released, uninjured. Another victim, Hoa Van, 34, of Pinellas Park, was also taken to the hospital. His condition was not immediately made available.

The fatal Florida boating accident is still under investigation by local authorities as they attempt to determine the cause of the maritime accident and who may have been at fault.
