A Florida boating accident involving a capsized vessel claims the life of one person and requires 11 others to be rescued. The incident took place on Tuesday morning, June 14, 2011, off the South Florida Coast.
According to reports, the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a capsized 24-foot boat without navigational lights off the coast of Riviera Beach. The U.S. Coast Guard conducted a four-hour search and rescue operation via the Coast Guard Cutter Knight, where they rescued 11 people from the maritime accident scene. One of those victims was taken to a local hospital where they were treated for a possible maritime injury.
Unfortunately, one of the passengers did not survive the incident. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's dive team recovered the victim's body from underneath the vessel.
Reports indicate that several passengers began exiting the lower cabin as the boat began to capsize, approximately 123 miles east of Riviera Beach.
Ten of the victims, who claimed Jamaican nationality, were questioned by officials. No other details were immediately made available.
The maritime accident is still under investigation by local authorities. The Coast Guard is investigating the incident as an apparent imigrant-smuggling operation. There was not an immediate indication as to what caused the boat to capsize.
